2016 has been a tragic year in terms of notable figures we’ve lost in the entertainment industry. However, there were three deaths that stood out in particular.
The first was David Bowie, one of the biggest names in pop music of the 70s and 80s, whose final album was released just two days before his death in January. We then lost musical icon Prince and legendary boxer/cultural figure Muhammad Ali.
The one thing that all three have in common is that they lived a life of purpose. They knew what they wanted out of life and didn’t let anyone or anything stop them from achieving greatness.
I’d like to share three ways that we can all begin to live a life of purpose:
Don’t waste time in pursuing your passion- It’s easy to get bogged down by the routine of life. We have jobs, families and bills to pay. However, you should never get so tied down to responsibilities that you neglect to do what you’re passionate about. If you like to write then start a blog. If you like to sing then create a You Tube channel. If you’re thinking about starting an entirely new career then go to your local library to checkout some books on your desired profession. The more you chip away at your goal the closer you get to making it a reality.
Make an impact on others– There is no better feeling than that of making a positive impact on someone else. Most days when I arrive to work I make it a mission to spend the first few moments of the day speaking with coworkers about non work related matters. I also try to offer words of encouragement, especially when I sense that someone is having a particularly rough day.
While having a recent discussion with a coworker, I was surprised to learn that they consider me to be an inspiration to them. Sometimes I feel like I don’t do enough to make a difference in the lives of others, but hearing those words was confirmation that I’m on the right path.
I believe that God places us around certain people in order for us to help them out and vice versa. We should never be so consumed with the cares of life that we neglect to help those around us.
Leave behind a lasting legacy– When looking at Prince’s discography I saw that he released 39 solo albums, 5 soundtrack albums, 4 live albums, 5 compilation albums, 17 video albums and 12 extended plays. What a staggering output!
From the moment Prince signed his first record deal at 18, he made up in his mind that he was going to create a body of work that would ensure he’d be remembered as one of the all-time greats. Whatever your passion is, do it with such a tenacity that people will remember you for generations to come.
I hope you enjoyed reading this. If you’re already living a life of purpose then my advice to you is to keep going strong. If not, then hopefully one my points will resonate with you in such a manner that you will now actively seek out ways to begin living your own life of purpose.
