As I was going about my usual Saturday activities, I came across a particularly interesting string of anime reviews on You Tube. I have no idea why I decided to check them out since I usually don’t watch these kinds of videos. Two hours later I sensed a newfound rush of anime fandom surging through my veins.

The series was AZ: The Top 20 Most Epically Cool Anime Characters. It was an eight part series from a You Tube user by the name of Gigguk. The series gives some awesome insight into many of the most iconic characters in anime history. He  selected Cowboy Bebop’s Spike Spiegel as the number one pick. This should come as no surprise since the character, just like everything else about Cowboy Bebop, exudes coolness in every aspect.

More than a simple countdown, Gigguk provides great analysis for every pick and it’s apparent that he put a ton of research into creating his list. At the conclusion of the final video he explains how he actually began work on the project a year prior to its completion. And once you see how detailed each video is you will believe his claim. It looks professional enough to air on television.

His style of conversation is very free flowing and you may find yourself rewinding quite a bit to catch certain things, as he makes a lot of pop culture references to every character along with oodles of trivial information. While Gigguk can be quite humorous (particularly when discussing the #19 pick) you can tell that he is truly passionate about anime. Whether you’re new to the genre or a seasoned vet, I’m sure you will learn something new.

Here is a list of #20-#2 picks with their respective series in parenthesis: 20- Aizen Sousuke (Bleach), 19- Hei (Darker Than Black), 18- Arsene Lupin III (Lupin The Third), 17- Light Yagami (Death Note), 16- Motoko Kusanagi (Ghost in the Shell), 15- Vash and Wolfwood (Trigun), 14- Mugen (Samurai Champloo), 13- Shizuo Heiwajima (Durarara!!), 12- Kenshiro (Fist of the North Star), Dio Brando (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure), 10- Roronoa Zoro (One Piece), 9- Guts (Berserk), 8- Alucard (Hellsing), 7- The Count (Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo), 6- Kamina (Gurren Lagann), 5- Eikichi Onizuka (Great Teacher Onizuka), 4- Claire Stanfield (Baccano!), 3- Balalaika (Black Lagoon) and 2- Johan Liebert (Monster).
